Acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based therapy approach that is centered in mindfulness of self, acceptance of uncomfortable or negative experiences as normal, and commitment to living life in accordance with a persons' values. Through this lens, we can reduce distress associated with uncomfortable emotions and experiences and live a happier, more fulfilled life.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is the most evidence-based treatment available for a wide range of mental health concerns, particularly anxiety and depression. In CBT we investigate the interactions between a persons' response to any given situation, their thoughts, feelings, and subsequent behaviours. Where we find one or more of these factors is maintaining undesired symptoms, we can address using a range of practical strategies.
Exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) is a behavioural therapy used primarily to address OCD, though components can be utilised for various forms of anxiety disorders and other mental health concerns where unhelpful avoidance and maladaptive coping strategies are maintaining symptoms and distress.
While CBT, ACT and ERP are the first-line treatments based on current evidence, all therapy and treatment approaches need to be client-centred. At mint psychology, we are mindful that the standard form of any therapy approach is not always best suited to all clients, and we ensure to adjust the approach to suit the individual. Some examples of this include trauma-informed CBT and neurodiversity-informed treatments approaches.
Components of other evidence-based therapy approaches may be incorporated into a client's treatment plan where helpful, including concepts from schema therapy, psychodynamic therapy, humanistic therapy, solution-focused therapy, general counselling, and motivational interviewing.

Please reach us at admin@mintpsychology.com.au or via the enquiry form below if you can't find an answer to your question
During your initial consult, your psychologist will spend time getting to know you and what has brought you to therapy. This usually involves interviewing to gather background history information, getting to know your symptoms and experiences, and some goal setting to inform the direction of future sessions. Your psychologist will cover important information including consent and confidentiality, give you lots of opportunities to ask any questions you may have, and may also discuss their recommended therapy approaches and frequency of sessions to achieve your goals. Depending on your preferences and purpose for attending sessions, this can range from casual and flexible to formal and structured.
Subsequent sessions are spent working towards your goals, with regular check ins / reviews to track progress and make sure you're getting what you want to get out of your sessions.
Telehealth sessions are conducted in the exact same manner as in person sessions - the only difference being you don't need to go anywhere and can attend your therapy session from the anywhere you feel comfortable!
The day prior to your appointment, you will receive a telehealth meeting link that you will use to access your session. If you do not receive your link, please let us know at admin@mintpsychology.com.au so we can ensure a link is sent out to you and avoid delaying the beginning of your appointment.
Referrals are not required to see a psychologist, however if you would like to receive a rebate from Medicare for your sessions, you will need a valid referral from a GP (see below question relating to Medicare).
To claim sessions under Medicare, you need to complete the following prior to attending your first session:
You can access a total of 10 Medicare-rebated sessions in a calendar year, though you can only receive a maximum of 6 sessions per referral - this means that you'll need to jump back to your GP at least once to obtain a new referral to claim the remaining sessions for that calendar year. Your psychologist will track how many Medicare sessions you have used and let you know when you need to obtain a new referral.
Your psychologist will also write letters to your GP to confirm your attendance after your initial consultation, provide updates on your progress, and request additional sessions as needed after you have completed the last session on each referral.
This will be discussed with you in your initial session as it varies depending on your needs and goals. However, as a general rule of thumb, mint psychology recommends attending at least 4 - 6 sessions to allow for information gathering, rapport building, and enough time to begin working through your goals.
Payment will be processed on the day of your session after the session has concluded via the card details provided by you during the booking process. Medicare rebates will be processed at the same time as payment, though make take additional time to appear in your account depending on Medicare's processing times. Private health insurance rebates will need to be claimed by you directly with your insurer - we will provide you with an invoice to facilitate this.
